Guinness Book of World Records
The Guinness Book of World Records is a famous collection of world records in human life, including many kinds of skills. A Guinness World Records event is the place to see record holders in action and watch them push themselves to the limit to break their records. But do you know how the book came out?
On November 10, 1951, an Englishman, Sir Beveagh, was having a discussion with his friends. They couldn’t agree with each other about whether the falcon flew most quickly among all birds in Europe. But they failed to find the answer in any book. Sir Beveagh thought there must be many such problems in the world. Why not publish a useful and interesting book to provide the answers to all these problems?
In 1954, Beveagh asked for help from two friends who owned an information supply center in London. They put together the first edition of the Guiness Book of World Records in August, 1955. Though the book had only 197 pages, it was very popular with its readers and won the title of top bestseller in Britain. Now it is enjoyed in 141 countries around the world. The 262 editions and the languages of 35 kinds it has used may be a record itself.
There are always opportunities for everyone to have a go at becoming a Guinness World Record holder—you could see your name in the book! We have found many new record holders such as 16-year-old Kathryn Ratcliffe who became the new Guinness World Record holder for eating the most food with chopsticks in 3 minutes. Kathryn has kept her record for the last 4 years and has appeared several times in the book.
