Tourists could cause an ecological disaster(生态灾难)if they keep taking holidays in the Antarctic, environmentalists have warned.

Around 17,000 people visited the icy continent last year and tourism figures are likely to increase as eco-tourists and adventure enthusiasts flock to the world's last great wilderness.

Delegates of the Antarctica Treaty System, meeting in Madrid this week, have called for tighter control over the amount of tourists allowed to visit.

Members fear an oil disaster could happen if ships carrying tourists hit icebergs. It would be an ecological tragedy(悲剧性事件)as the freezing temperature would make a clean-up operation almost impossible.

At the Spanish conference a delegate from New Zealand, Trevor Hughes, said, “One of the key areas is safety as there is no Antarctic code(代码)of shipping. The idea of vessels that are full of heavy bunker oil navigating in these waters is a worry.”

Mr. Hughes continued, “We believe that overall limits do need to be considered though that may be a bit more of a difficult discussion. There are economic interests involved”.

A total of 49 countries control the administration of the continent and New Zealand and Australia are leading the campaign(运动)to clamp down on tour operators.
