Step 2. Lead-in 1. Brainstorming: Do you love your parents? Do you think you show respect for your parents? Do you sometimes quarrel with them? 2. Encourage Ss to give examples of kinds of problems, for example: * Some parents may interfere in their children’s lives and try to influence their decisions about their future career or study plans. * Parents may want to make decisions for children and also force them into doing things they don’t want to, such as household chores or extra study. * Some parents don’t always trust their child, and ask lots of questions about a child’s social activities or the reason why they are late coming home, etc. 3. Teacher: Growing up can be difficult. Such misunderstanding and problems between parents and children are quite common nowadays. Then, what should you do to deal with them? Listen to their instructions, explain yourselves to them or disobey and even quarrel with them?
Step 3 Free talk 1.Have ss focus on the instructions and look at each picture carefully. 2.Imagine the situation and try to describe it with your own words. Picture1: ture up, loud(关键词) Mother ____________________________________________________ Son _____________________________________________________ Picture2: supper, by 6 o’clock Father ____________________________________________________ Daughter___________________________________________________ Picture3: a waste of time, signature, pop star Mother ____________________________________________________ Daughter___________________________________________________ Picture4: low marks, computer games Mother ____________________________________________________ Son _____________________________________________________
Step 4 Discussion Give students three questions and organize them to discuss.(ask several students to give a feedback) 1. Do your parents try to force you to do things you don’t like? 2. When you have a problem and want to talk to someone, who do you choose to talk to? 3. Can you describe an experience with your parents that was not pleasant? Step5 Conclusion Activities above can deepen Ss’ understanding of the topic---- growing pains, and help them find ways to narrow generation gaps. * Why do these happen more often than not? Generation gap means there are great differences between the younger generations and the elders. It occurs when older and younger people do not understand each other because of their different experiences, opinions, habits and behaviour. Especially as one gets older, she or he isn’t always understood by the elders, because of what she or he does, says or wears. So she or he will often have trouble or pains during their growth. * Do you think there is a generation gap between you and your parents? If so, what is the best way to solve the problem?
